Since my life basically revolves around food (hello stretchy pants!), I thought I’d share the 10 best meals I had in 2017. When I look back on the best memories of the last 12 months, most involve food.
What can I say, we are a family of food-lovers. What’s the saying? People who love food are the best people. Yep, that’ us.
Many of these came from Destin restaurants, but some are from our travels this past year. So in no particular order, here we go…
Clothesline Bacon from Surfing Deer in Seagrove Beach, FL
Surfing Deer has quickly become one of our favorite spots on 30A. We always start with the clothesline bacon. While the presentation of this bacon is super fun, the taste is out of this world! The bacon is thick and chewy and seasoned to perfection. The farm-fresh peas underneath are just as good as the bacon above. Any Southern-food lover will devour this appetizer. How cute are those tiny clothespins?!
Baja Shrimp Taco Salad from Burrito del Sol in Destin, FL
If you follow me on Insta (or we’re friends IRL), you know that I have lunch at Burrito del Sol nearly every week. It’s a quick-service Tex Mex spot that’s actually owned and run by some brothers that I grew up with and they are killing it! Everything on the menu is delicious, but I’m partial to the blackened shrimp salad that’s loaded with pineapple salsa, cabbage, and a spicy/creamy Baja dressing. My mouth is watering!
Lobster Eggs Benedict from Blue Heaven in Key West, FL
Key West is one of my FAVORITE vacay spots ever. The whole island has such a fun, laid back vibe and the food has lots of Cuban influence. Blue Heaven is a must-do for brunch while in Key West. It’s a really funky place with chickens roaming the grounds and you’ll likely wait an hour or two, but it’s worth it. The lobster benedict is what they’re known for and it’s definitely what you should order (I added avocado on my most recent trip and it was the best idea I’ve had in a long time).
Nutella Pizza at Mimmo’s Ristorante Italiano in Destin, FL
Y’all. It’s Nutella. On a pizza. I’ve already professed my love for Mimmo’s and this dessert just solidifies their permanent place in my heart. It’s the same salty, chewy dough that they use for savory pizzas, but topped with a generous layer of Nutella, white chocolate chips, and powdered sugar. I thought my kids’ heads would explode when they saw this bad boy. So fun!
Cheese Plate at Chan’s Wine World in Destin, FL
Nothing special, but I’ve never had a cheese plate at Chan’s that I didn’t enjoy. They have an awesome selection of cheeses and cured meats and the hot, crusty bread and herb oil just sends it over the top. If you’re craving wine and cheese (and who isn’t?), check out Wine World. Pro tip: carafes of wine are half price during lunch!
Sweet V Burger at The Other End in Destin, FL
I’m a sucker for a good burger and The Other End has some of the best in Destin. The Sweet V is topped with swiss cheese and caramelized onions. The patty is expertly salted and cooked on a griddle giving in a perfect crunchy crust. The Other End is such a cool spot. It’s a beergarden in an Airstream trailer overlooking Destin harbor. It’s definitely a place you should experience. It’s totally kid-friendly and the soft pretzel is life-changing. Life-changing, I tell you!
Campanelle with White Bolognese at Domenica in New Orleans, LA
I know the quality of my photo is terrible, but this literally might have been the BEST THING I ATE in all of 2017. I’ve never been so full in all my life because I could not stop eating. The campanelle pasta is homemade at Domenica (all the pastas are made in-house) and the white Bolognese was reminiscent of a carbonara sauce with the addition of roasted Brussel sprouts. So creamy. So sausage-y. So freaking delicious. If you visit New Orleans and don’t eat at Domenica, you are missing out, my friends.
Chargrilled Filet with Squash Casserole and Green Beans at Boshamps in Destin, FL
Boshamps is another restaurant you’re probably familiar with if you follow me on Insta. We basically live there. The kids love it, we love it. Win-win. One night Jason and I sat at the bar sans-kids and decided to split the chargrilled filet (because the guy next to us ordered it and it looked incredible). OMG so good. There was not one bad bite on that plate. Perfectly grilled beef, cheesy squash casserole, and salty, bacon-y green beans. Nothing not to like about that meal!
Louisiana Rice with Blue Crab and Popcorn at Coquette in New Orleans, LA
I’m so sorry for you, because this dish isn’t actually on the menu at Coquette, but came as one of the courses in the five-course blind tasting menu we opted for. I know rice doesn’t sound all that exciting, but it’s always been my very favorite starchy side dish and this preparation was insane. I would compare it to a comforting chicken and rice dish, but with sweet, delicate crab meat. It was creamy and salty, while also fresh and crunchy. The tasting menu was so much fun and I would highly recommend!
All-American Sundae from Plaza Ice Cream Parlor at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL
Jason and I always have to get this sundae when we visit Disney World with the kiddos. It’s what an ice cream sundae should be- vanilla AND chocolate ice cream, hot fudge sauce, peanut butter drizzle, whipped cream, and a cherry. Simple perfection. It’s on Main Street at Magic Kingdom.
I’m looking forward to more tasty adventures in 2018! Cheers, friends.
