Fupucker’s Beachside Bar & Grill is located in the heart of Destin and has been around as long as I can remember. In fact, the restaurant opened its doors in 1982 and has been serving up food and fun to friends ever since.
Everything about Fudpucker’s is funky!
There are two locations (Destin and Okaloosa Island), but the kids and I chose to visit the Destin location. The building itself is the hottest shade of pink you’ve ever seen with beach umbrellas, surf boards, and plenty of other zany nicknacks all around.
Other than the food, one of the biggest draws of the restaurant is Gator Beach. You’ll find more than 80 live alligators sunning themselves on their own beach below the restaurant.
The kids were so excited to check out the gators but we decided to fuel up with lunch first.
Talk about a selection! The menu at Fud’s is huge. With everything from stuffed shrimp parmesan to colossal burgers to alligator tail, they’ve got something for everyone.
The award winning kids’ menu is extensive, also, and offers a variety of kid favorites like burgers, grilled cheese, and chicken fingers.
Julia ordered a cheeseburger, Mac wanted chicken fingers, and I went with a garden salad with steamed shrimp since I was *trying* to be good. 😉 I’m quite certain I’ll have to go back and get the Fud Nacho Grande now that I’m pregnant and can eat whatever I want, right?
Before our meals were served, a piping hot plate of hush puppies came out and we all loved them!
Julia went to work on her burger and enjoyed the mandarin oranges. My kids love fries and junk as much as any other kid, but they also love fruit and it’s nice to have the option.
The kids’ meals came with a tiny plastic alligator on top (you can see it in Julia’s hand) and Julia and Mac thought that was the greatest thing ever! Those little details are nice. We went for lunch and there was no wait, but a simple little toy like that could make all the difference to a whiny and cranky kid who is up way past their bed time. This momma appreciated the gesture!
My salad left much to be desired, but then again, it was just raw veggies with plain shrimp on top. I certainly knew what I was getting myself into. There are plenty of other entree options that look much tastier.
After our lunch, the manager asked if the kids could have a little ice cream. Sure, why not?!
The kids’ eyes just about popped out of their heads when they saw this monster of a sundae! We tried our best to make a dent in the layers of fudge brownie, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. If Jason had been with us we probably would have polished it off. 😉
I think Mac appreciated dessert.
After our light lunch we headed out to Gator Beach.
Gator Beach is open daily from 11:00 until the restaurant closes. You can feed the gators and have your picture made with one.
The kids were so excited to see and hold a real alligator, but they became a bit apprehensive when we were up close and personal with Olaf. Thank goodness for Big John the gator handler. He was very friendly and showed us how to safely handle the alligator. They were still a bit nervous so he agreed to be in our picture with us. I wonder just how many family pictures Big John has been in.
After our time with Olaf we checked out the rest of Gator Beach.
The kids thought the alligators were a hoot! They would have stayed all afternoon watching the gators sun themselves, eat scraps of food, and leisurely swim across their enclosure.
Fudpucker’s is also home to Pearl the albino alligator. Fud’s claims that she’s one of about 50 albino allegros in the United States. She was much bigger than the other gators and was in her own space. I forgot to snap a picture of her.
The kids had an absolute BLAST at Fudpucker’s! It is very much a family-friendly place. In the summer the wait gets very long at lunch and dinner, but there is plenty for everyone to do until your table is ready. In addition to Gator Beach, there is a covered playground area, a huge outdoor bar (with entertainment at certain times), and a world-famous gift shop. Fudpucker’s sells about a bazillion shirts a year.
We stayed two hours and the kids were still not ready to leave. We’ll definitely go back soon. And fall is a great time to visit. The weather is perfect and the crowds aren’t bad. There is also an arcade next door to Fudpucker’s called Fat Daddy’s Arcade (I believe it’s part of the Fud’s family). We’ve not been to Fat Daddy’s yet, but we definitely plan on it soon. A lot of my friends’ kids absolutely love it!
All in all, I think Fud’s is a place you should definitely visit with the kiddos. Toddlers up to teenagers will find something to enjoy at Fudpucker’s. If you’re anything like this momma, as long as the kids are happy and occupied, the parents are happy, too.
